I’ve had some opportunity to use this a bit and it’s my go-to tripod after using a Gitzo tripod for years. Here are a few of my thoughts about it.I wanted a versatile tripod, and I don’t know of many that are more versatile than this. Have a tripod that can reach over most people’s head? Check. Have one that can be used as a table-top tripod? Check. Have one that can be used as a monopod? Check. Have one that can be used with an inverted column? Yep. Need one that can go flat? Sure. The acra-swiss compatible tripod head is great and removable. I often put a gimbal head on so that I can use a big telephoto. It can get super tall, but at that size, it’s not the most stable (wiggles a bit). I like to use it to get over crowds. It’s not a perfect tripod, however. At nearly 5 pounds, it’s a little heavy, but it needs to be robust to hold 60 pounds. I have not put that claim to the test, but it’s nice to know it could. The two things my old Gitzo could do that this cannot are move an off-center column and variable leg locks. The old Gitzo could have the center column at any angle off center. It was great for macro work. I have mostly managed without that. The variable leg locks is more of an issue for me. The old Gitzo had a clamp lock that allowed me to put the legs in any position and have them be rock solid. This one has three “locking positions” which aren’t really locking positions. It is a little stopper that you pull out and hits a gear notch so that there’s no further the leg can go out. It largely works, but I’d prefer a locking mechanism. I often take photos in awkward positions: in streams, on hillsides, etc. This means I have to get rather creative with leg lengths and positions. I’d really like to be able to lock the legs in position. As mentioned in the other reviews, the bag leaves some to be desired with the zipper not being great. The negatives, in my opinion, do not outweigh the positives for this tripod. I’m pretty happy with this. There’s always room for improvement, but for a person looking for a tripod that can be used in just about any situation, you do not need to look much further than this.
