Lots of things have been said about this product over the years here on Amazon, but as someone who purchased this the same day they found it (a few days ago today), walking in mostly blind, I’m extremely pleased.TL;DR: The Camillus is very durable, and the blades show no signs of wearing out soon after my initial usage. They also produce a *very* nice edge, if you’re not a cro magnon and are capable of properly using blade sharpeners. FWIW, in May of 2019, the current version of this product being shipped out to customers arrived in perfect condition, is extraordinarily durable in both the body and the sharpening elements, produces an incredible edge with all sharpening bits, and it’s an 11/10 from me.I just purchased a Sharpal, and was pleased with it, but then I received my Camillus, and was delighted. The Sharpal is a great sharpening tool, and the same goes for the Camillus. They’re both decent to hold, they both work extremely well in all of their various functions, and I’d definitely recommend both to a friend. In my opinion, the Sharpal is an outdoors-activities-backpack item, to be used in a pinch, and the Camillus is a toolbox item, to be used more regularly. It really came down to a more acute default/preset angle on the Camillus, making the edges naturally sharper than the angle on the Sharpal produces, and having more various sharpening options. After my testing, durability also made this list. After having used the carbide blades for two dozen passes on a dozen different blades (scissors of various types and sizes, serrated edges, smooth edges), and the ceramics for two dozen more passes, all blades passed the paper tests (and then some, on cardboard, thin leather, and plastic) with both the Sharpal and the Camillus. They probably would have passed the paper tests earlier, but I was also intentionally going a bit overboard. Every cut, however, was much easier and cleaner after the edge was honed with the Camillus. The Sharpal has a diamond rod to compensate for this (and the only thing the Camillus is lacking, IMHO), but you have to do the angling by hand so unless you’re a professional it won’t be inconsistent. The Camillus even completely restored my Leatherman Surge’s steel knife to a lasting razor edge, on which the Sharpal got close but not done quite as well. All sharpening aspects of the Camillus have also proven to be significantly more durable than the Sharpal: my Camillus shows literally zero signs of wear, and my Sharpal’s ceramics are unusable with less work done with them so I’ve ordered a replacement product for my backpack *only*.If you’re looking for a compact high quality all purpose sharpener, you’ve found it. Well done, Camillus, I’ll be buying another later for someone!
